From Salzburg into the wide world

This year, the Peace Light Ceremony of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides of Austria took place in Salzburg for the first time. Every year, about 1,400 Scouts and Guides from 20 nations come to Austria for this celebration. Due to the Corona pandemic, this was unfortunately not possible in this form this year. At the celebration in the Salzburg Cathedral, only small delegations of Scouts and Guides from the Austrian provinces attended. In addition, 22 international Scout and Guides organizations joined via video messages, including organizations from South and North America. However, participation in the celebration was possible for everyone via livestream.

"This Peace Light is a whisper of hope, love and faith. It is a glimmer of hope of a special kind," said Archbishop Franz Lackner, who presided over the celebration along with Olivier Dantine, Protestant superintendent for Salzburg and Tyrol, Archpriest Dumitru Viezuianu of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Salzburg, and John Reves, priest of the Salzburg Byzantine Prayer Center.

After the celebration, the representatives of the federal states handed over the Light of Peace at the respective borders to Scouts and Guides from the neighboring countries. The light is carried from border to border and thus reaches everyone involved. On December 24, the scouts distribute the light in their home communities.
